Eating healthy, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight are all very important to do if you want to increase your
chances of getting pregnant. In addition to this, there are certain foods you can eat that will heighten your level of fertility. These are often called fertility foods.

There are also some foods that you should avoid, as they will hinder your fertility. Research on either types of food are relatively new, but there have been a number of studies that show foods that are clearly on one side or the other. If you are trying to get pregnant, watching what you eat in regards to these specific foods might be just what you need.

Fertility Foods For Men

Men's fertility is just as essential to hopeful couples-to-be as women's is. As with women, there are certain as you men can eat to increase your chances of getting a baby. Oysters can increase the production of both sperm and testosterone, due to their large zinc content. Zinc is also found in beef, dairy, eggs, nuts, beans, and whole grains, though not in as great a quantity as is found in oysters. Pumpkin seeds also have a high amount of zinc.

Cranberries, collard greens, pomegranate juice, and dried fruits have antioxidants that protect sperm, while oranges, broccoli, grapefruit, and tomatoes have vitamin C, which improves the motility and viability of your sperm. Vitamin E (found in vegetable oils) and vitamin A (found in carrots, apricots, red peppers and leafy greens), keep sperm vital and prevent sluggish sperm, respectively.

Fertility Foods For Women

Men and women require different
foods to increase their fertility level. For women, fertility foods include dairy and lean protein. Dairy offers high levels of calcium, which is important for reproductive health as well as bone strength. Additionally, whole milk once a day may improve ovulation.

Calcium is also in leafy greens, almonds, tofu, and canned salmon, if dairy isn't your thing. Lean turkey, beef, and chicken each contain iron, which increases your level of fertility.

Whole grains, fruit and vegetables, and beans all have complex carbohydrates, which may increase fertility, as they don't mess up your insulin levels as refined carbohydrates do, and spiked insulin levels can cause irregularity in your cycle.

Wild yams may stimulate your ovulation, and berries contain antioxidants that protect the cells in your reproductive system. Just like men, you also need the zinc found in oysters, nuts, eggs, whole grains, beef, and poultry.

Fertility Foods To Avoid

Both men and women should avoid high-mercury fish, such as swordfish, tuna, shark, and king mackerel, when trying to increase your
chances of getting pregnant. Regardless of your gender, mercury has been linked with infertility.

Women should also be cautious of this while pregnant, as studies have show it can harm your developing baby. Another fertility food women should avoid are foods high in trans fat (packaged snacks and donuts, for instance), as these can lead to ovulatory infertility.

Men, you have a different problem. Junk food--anything fried, fatty, or sugary--can impair your fertility level. Caffeinated drinks and alcohol are also important for men to avoid or moderate, as too much can decrease your sperm count. Two cups of coffee a day or less, and an alcoholic drink every so often shouldn't be problematic.
